We’re proud to share a network improvement that’s making a significant environmental impact.
Over the last quarter, we’ve made an innovative change to our service network, ensuring work is carried out by engineers who are based closer to the jobs they attend. By prioritising local expertise and reducing unnecessary travel, we’ve reduced the average journey distance from 16.8 miles to 13.76 miles across our subcontractor fleet.
With each van completing around two journeys a day, this improvement delivers an estimated 148 tonnes of CO₂e saved every year, which is roughly equivalent to:
- Taking 50-60 petrol cars off the road for a year, or
- The carbon absorbed annually by around 6,500 trees.
This innovation didn’t require new technology or major capital investment. Instead, it came from creating a stronger, better distributed network, improved scheduling and a commitment to using local talent first. It’s a clear example of sustainability and service quality working hand in hand.
By reducing travel time, we’ve not only lowered emissions, we’ve also improved response times, strengthened community employment and enhanced the resilience of our national network.
“We’ll continue to build on this approach, driving operational improvements that reduce environmental impact, support local capability and create value that scales across the company.” Steve Mckeown, Commercial Director
